Welcome to the RockMass web site

The site has been operating since 2001, presenting information related to underground rock construction. This is version 3.1

From September 2007, the consulting company, RockMass AS, has been operating in engineering geology and rock engineering.

Stetind.JPGAn important item in engineering geology and rock engineering is to describe and characterize rock masses in a way to find representative ratings and values for use in engineering and design. Therefore, rockmass characterization and description are main issues in this web site.
The RMi (Rock Mass index) system is described. It is developed for help in characterizing rockmasses for use in rock engineering.
Possibilities and limitations of classification systems are discussed through comments and published papers. In addition some published papers, useful information on geology and rock engineering items are presented.

From time to time new information will be presented. Hope some of it can be of use for you.

See paper 'Combining RMR, Q and RMi'. A computer spreadsheet applying combined input of rockmass parameters makes it easy to calculate the RMR, Q, and RMi values.

book_front_small.pngA new book in Rock Engineering will be launched in July.
More information can be found under
'Information'.

Important quotations new ones will be presented from time to time

Evert Hoek (1994): I see almost no research effort being devoted to the generation of the basic input data which we need for our faster and better models and our improved design techniques. These tools are rapidly reaching the point of being severely data limited.

Karl Terzaghi (in his latest years): I am more and more amazed about the blind optimism with which the younger generation invades this field, without paying attention to the inevitable uncertainties in the data on which their theoretical reasoning is based and without making serious attempts to evaluate the resulting errors.
