input parameters

A main task in the collection of ground characteristics is to describe the actual volume of rock masses so that representative values of the input parameters can be determined.   Tables with values or ratings  of each of the input parameters are presented in the papers published on RMi. There are three types of parameters:
  1. The ones related to the inherent properties of the rock mass, used in the RMi number
  2. The properties of the forces acting in or on the rock mass (rock stresses, ground water), and
  3. The direction of some of the features in 1 and 2 with respect to the tunnel or cavern, used in the RMi support method in addition to the parameters included in the RMi number.
Many of the parameters vary within a certain range for the volume of interest, and it is the task of the geologist or engineering geologist to observe and characterize such variations.  The degree of jointing measured as block volume Vb), volumetric joint count (Jv), RQD, etc. is generally the most important input parameter. It can be measured in different ways by simple or more detailed observation (and measurement) of characteristic blocks, by joint set spacings, or by core logging.

A description of various measurements of the degree of jointing is presented in the paper Measurements and correlations between block size and rock quality designation (RQD)

A detailed description of observations and descriptions to characterize joints and jointing is presented in the paper
Measurement and characterization of rock mass jointing

The paper The weighted joint density method leads to improved characterization of jointing gives some information on better collection of geo data.

The block size can also sometimes be assumed from refraction seismic velocities as shown in the paper Application of seismic refraction survey in assessment of jointing
.

A comprehensive description of ground parameters is given in the Appendices of the Ph.D. thesis, especially in the Appendix 3 the conditions of rockmasses are mentioned.

The RMi value can be determined from the equations or diagrams presented in the published papers, or it can be calculated from the spreadsheet to estimate RMi or the spreadsheet to estimate rock support  presented in the foregoing tags.

The spreadsheets contain tables with values or ratings of the required input parameters.

Note, that in all works related to the use of geology in rock constructions, the geological knowledge and an understanding of the site geological conditions is a provision for sound engineering.
